I was back at Highgrove this week teaching woodcarving to some lovely young people who were on a residential to learn some new crafts. They all did amazingly well, considering how hot it was 🥵 and the fact I have really bad baby brain at the moment 😆🤰 I certainly didn't expect them all to fall in love with woodcarving (although one of them certainly caught the bug 👍) but if nothing else, I hope it opened their eyes to the fact there are other options out there away from the mainstream careers. #highgrovecrafts #younggloucestershire #woodcarving #somersetcarver #trysomethingnew #keepingcraftalive
I carved a little relief plaque as a gift for a friend who I've known for 13 years. We met when I carved a sculpture for her into a tree trunk when we both lived in Hampshire. I'd just started my business and she put her faith in me to create something unique. She (and the sculpture) now live down in Cornwall so I wanted to carve another design that suits her new location. The starting point for the design was when I came across the word Mordros which is Cornish for 'the sound of the sea' which I loved. As is evident, I was heavily influenced by lino printing designs that linked in with another project I was working on at the time, I then designed the lettering and flourishes myself before carving it into Ash and finishing it in oil in case she wanted to put in her garden. Thankfully, it was well received! 🙏🏻
One flower pattern, five different interpretations! I absolutely love seeing students put their individual style into their design and these lovely students did exactly that as part of their one day workshop with me last week at @highgrovecraft They were over from Germany as part of the @fashion_x_craft programme...best of luck with the rest of the programme guys, it was a pleasure to meet you!
